In fulfilling corporate social responsibility, the Company and its Subsidiary focus on implementing activities in the environmental sector, fulfilling employee rights including those related to occupational health and safety, improving the welfare of the surrounding community and establishing good relationships with customers and business partners. 

The corporate social responsibility commitment is realized through various implementation of initiative programs carried out by the Company’s Subsidiary in the following areas:

  1. Corporate Social Responsibility related to Environmental Responsibility

The Company and its Subsidiary always ensure that the management of environmental impacts from the exploration, operational, to post-mining stages have been carried out properly and in accordance with the laws and regulations

This management effort is important for the Company and its Subsidiary to achieve energy efficiency, biodiversity, emission control, and waste reduction or utilization. Environmental management and preservation will be an important key for the Company and its Subsidiary in carrying out every business activity.

PT Berau Coal, the Company’s subsidiary conducts environmental risk assessment on a regular basis at all mining sites in the framework of:

1. Standard Requirements and Procedures;

2. Evaluation and implementation of system and control to avoid, reduce, or minimize significant impact; and

3. Implementation of environmental management and monitoring to evaluate the success of the programs that have been realized.

Certification in Environmental Field

PT Berau Coal, the Company’s Subsidiary efforts to contribute in environmental preservation in the long-term are to control and monitor its compliance with the certification standard criteria of ISO 14001:2015 on Environmental Management System.

Land Management

For areas where mining activities have been completed, PT Berau Coal, the Company’s Subsidiary, will carry out reclamation and revegetation activities as part of the Mine Closure program.

Reclamation is carried out by overburden recontouring and top soil spreading to areas that is no longer mined. Reclamation activities are also accompanied by revegetation activities, by planting new plants on the reclaimed land, especially for fast-growing plant species. In addition, Berau Coal also conducts ongoing monitoring of biodiversity in its operational areas

Emission Control for Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Reduction

The Company through its Subsidiary is continuously committed to controlling emissions as much as possible through a series of activities and innovations. Various efforts that have been made are:

  1. Implementing pollution prevention to reduce the release of greenhouse gases (GHG);
  2. Inventory of greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. Conducting climate change mitigation efforts; and
  4. Reducing the amount of emissions generated from operational activities.
  1. Corporate Social Responsibility related to Employment, Occupational Health and Safety

The Company and Subsidiaries always prioritize occupational health and safety principles in their operational activities. For this reason, the Company and its Subsidiaries are committed to achieving zero fatality in all mining areas and operational activities, by trying to create mining activities that are free from work-related accidents and diseases.

Occupational Health and Safety Management System Standards

Currently, PT Berau Coal, the Company’s subsidiary, has implemented ISO 45001:2018 concerning the Occupational Safety and Health Management System (SMK3) in all of its operational activities.

  1. Corporate Social Responsibility related to Community Empowerment

The Company is always committed to supporting the development of the surrounding community as one of the stakeholders who are an integral part of the running business ecosystem. Therefore, the Company seeks to continue to empower and develop the potential of the community in order to promote and improve the local community’s economy in a sustainable manner through CSR activities carried out by its Subsidiary.

CSR activities carried out by PT Berau Coal, the Company’s Subsidiary, are focused on 7 activity sectors, or what is called the 7 pillar program, which consists of:

  1. Education and Science Technology

CSR program in the field of Education and Science and Technology aims to improve the quality of education for the community around the mine in order to create qualified, creative and independent future generations. Programs implemented in the fields of education and science and technology include increasing school enrollment rates, university scholarships, improving the quality of education and increasing community competence and knowledge.

  1. Health and Nutrition;

CSR program in the field of Health and Nutrition aims to improve public health condition in order to enable people to live healthily and have a high life expectancy. The programs implemented include improving maternal and child health, improving public health and providing assistance in handling Covid-19

  1. Increasing Real Income or employment;

CSR program in the area of Increasing Real Income or Employment is an economic activity according to the profession one has. This program includes eminent agribusiness commodity in the form of trading activities and other related agribusiness. Superior commodities that are currently being worked on include cocoa, rice and forest honey

  1. Economic Self-Reliance

CSR program in the field of Economic Self-Reliance is a community empowerment program in economic field as an effort to create a prosperous and independent society in a sustainable manner. This is done, among others, by providing assistance to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and village empowerment

  1. Social and Culture

CSR programs in the fields of Social and Culture are implemented through Religious programs, Preservation of Regional Culture, Recovery Resettlement of KAT residents, Sports and Youth, Social and Environmental Natural Disasters, and Lighting Facilities.

  1. Providing Opportunities to Community;

Providing opportunities to the community includes environmental programs. This program aims to educate the public towards Clean and Healthy Behavior (PHBS) based on environmental sanitation, so that diseases originating from the environment can be prevented earlier including endemic diseases.

  1. Establishment of Community Organization in Supporting CDE

The Pillar of Establishing Community Organization in Supporting CDE is in the form of a program to strengthen village-owned enterprises (BUMK) in the assisted villages of PT Berau Coal, the Company’s Subsidiary
